Amazon & L&T collaborate to accelerate development of software-defined vehicles
L&T Technology Services, a leading global digital engineering and R&D services company based in India, has announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to help global automakers accelerate their journey to Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs). SDVs extensively use software to manage their operations, ranging from performance and comfort to safety and efficiency, using sensors and computer systems. As these vehicles can continue to receive value additions through software updates from the cloud after purchase, the alliance of L&T and AWS will help manufacturers accelerate the development of SDVs with customized safety and security solutions.
The partnership has resulted in an impressive 25% reduction in the time it takes to launch new products. This has been achieved through AWS’s virtual workbenches that facilitate the testing and development of new software for electronic vehicle control units (ECUs), which manage the operation of a car. This development is expected to bring significant improvements in several areas such as safety, security, entertainment and convenience, thanks to over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
L&T Technology Services helps automakers around the world accelerate SDV development and uses Amazon CodeWhisperer as the engineering team’s development environment of choice. As an AI-powered code recommendation system that works in real time, Amazon CodeWhisperer accelerates the creation of smart applications such as automatic braking, driver alerts and steering functions that improve vehicle performance. New capabilities have now been introduced that allow relevant stakeholders to access and interact with automotive data through large language models built on AWS.
L&T Technology Services also uses Amazon Bedrock, a fully managed service that provides access to leading foundation models for building and scaling AI applications. This helps the company implement cloud-based vehicle test automation and reuse pre-approved safety compliance codes to further reduce development time for new software applications. With AWS’s IoT FleetWise service, the company can enable near real-time data transfer to the cloud, improving vehicle quality, safety and autonomy.
As part of their efforts to equip their employees with the requisite digital skills for innovation, L&T Technology Services has launched an ambitious training program at AWS. Their Global Engineering Academy works tirelessly on the ongoing proficiency of their workforce and hosts generative AI workshops with AWS. By March 2024, the academy aims to train 1,000 engineers worldwide in critical cloud skills and applications, including Amazon CodeWhisperer, allowing them to develop SDV software and applications at a faster pace.
“Generative AI ushers in a new era of possibilities for the automotive industry. With AWS cloud services, we can quickly innovate to help our customers improve mobility,” said Alind Saxena, President, Sales and Whole Time Director at LTTS. “We are committed to training 1,000 engineers in generative AI with AWS by March 2024, ensuring the brightest minds and most advanced technology shape the future of mobility.”
Vaishali Kasture, Director (Commercial Sales) of AWS India and South Asia at Amazon Web Services India Pvt. Ltd. said, “As the Indian automotive sector races towards modernization, technologies like cloud and generative AI are propelling a future of smart, connected vehicles. We are excited to help innovators like LTTS realize the full potential of cloud and generative AI.” She added: “Together we don’t just build cars, we build experiences, increase efficiency and create a smarter future.”
