The 63-year-old singer believes that the US is currently in the middle of a “low ebb” – but Bono is convinced that the US will bounce back.
The U2 star – who was born in Dublin, Ireland – told Channel 4: “I’m drawn to freedom. I think it’s important that we show the world what freedom looks like, how freedom behaves.
“So I’m going to bet on freedom and I’m going to bet that America will come back from this pretty low ebb that it is at the moment.”
The Edge, Bono’s bandmate, has also expressed fears about the effects of climate change.
The 62-year-old star explained that the band cares passionately about the issue.
He said: “Like any reasonable person, we see climate change as the existential threat of our generation. It’s something we care deeply about.”
Meanwhile, Bono previously admitted that his own stance on activism has evolved over the years.
The award-winning star believes “entrepreneurial capitalism” is the key to solving some of the world’s biggest problems.
Speaking to the New York Times newspaper, Bono explained: “I ended up as an activist in a very different place than where I started. I thought that if we just redistributed resources, we could solve all the problems. I know now that it doesn’t is true.
“There’s a funny moment where you realize that as an activist: The escape ramp out of extreme poverty is, er, commerce, it’s entrepreneurial capitalism.”
Bono also acknowledged that business leaders play an important role in society.
He shared, “I didn’t grow up liking the idea that we’ve made heroes out of business people, but if you bring jobs to a community and treat people well, then you’re a hero.”
